Working with a pliable material as rattan, we need to understand the way the material could be explore into certain shapes, but also the limitation of how we handle it so that we could create a design that are able to be produce and replicated well.
Grid chair, was created with the aim of production efficiency and to support the possibility of industrial mass production. Grid chair was made with certain thoughts on minimalistic details and unsophisticated process of production, of which we are able to create a simple line of design, that could still emphasize the strong character of rattan.

By combining two kind of strong materials (rattan and metal), the lightness come out due to the material characters, which is rattan that has really light weight, and metal that could be strong even though using thin figures, resulting an astonishing piece as Bunga Chair. The curvature back rest on Bunga chair, gain its comfort from the details of rattan material being woven which still have the flexibility on it, a true character that could only resulted from the exotic material. Bunga means “flower” in Bahasa Indonesia, derives from the petal look shape on the back rest.

The Net brings a new look and vibe to rattan. By combining the raw finished natural material with solid colored metal a fresh and fun set of furniture was born. The goal of the design was to give rattan, a material considered classic even old fashioned, a new and contemporary spirit.

Lightness has been considered important for a piece of furniture due to the necessity to have a versatile product on the lack of space in urban area nowadays.
As for Mantis, the challenge is to combine different measurement of rattan and make it rigid, considering rattan as a material is really flexible. From this approach, therefore the diagonal pattern for the small rattan core being used. By using this pattern, the decorative element become part of the structure that give the strength. The contrast on the usage of small diameter of metal leg, resemble a unique posture just like a mantis.

The Eunos lounge chair started from the Designer Dispatch Service programme, and was commissioned by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The JICA project connected designers with local industries in an effort to add value and expand their market. Knowing that the company had a classic line of lounge chair that has been sold for decades, I decided  to refine their own design using rattan with leather binding.  Eunos is meant to be everyone’s contemplation place, very comforting, it can become a new icon in any room.

Goda means tease in Indonesian. Molded plastic technology has become the solution for mass production and also has affected the evolution of furniture design.  Over the past decade we have seen some classic wood furniture designs remade with plastic. Indonesia is well known for the skill of our traditional wood craftsmen so instead of creating plastic furniture the Goda series teases the eye with the colors of plastic – white, black, red, yellow, blue, and green – but is handmade by artisans from wood and also shows off the natural wood on the seat.

The word maduis Indonesian for honey. The design of the Madu stool is based on the natural and complex honeycomb. The challenge of the Maduwas to use small rattan cores  – only 10 mm – to create a massive and strong structure based on the honeycomb shapes. The Maduis yet another inspiration from nature that provoked me to innovate with natural materials.

A stool or side table has never been a center of interest in a room. To create a piece of furniture that has minimum function yet has a unique appearance was the inspiration for the Dano Tripod Stool. When I was a little I fascinated by the shape of moon rockets in the  Tintin of Herge’ s comics. For me, that tripod rocket shape is iconic and inspired me to use the beautifully curved tripod legs as the basis for the Dano. Made with reclaimed sungkai wood from industrial waste, the Dano recalls a story from the past and its joyful shape can also be used as a side table but begs you not to put it aside.

The Edge armchair comes from my concern for the overuse of forest timber. The Edge mainly uses reclaimed and recycled material from housing waste. With its simple shape one might think it is machine made but instead it was made by hand. The Edge proves how advanced and capable our Indonesian craftsmen can be. This chair is a gentle reminder to take the wise and responsible approach to using natural materials while showing off the skills of our Indonesian craftsmen – both at the edge.

The Loop lounge chair was created to show the unique characters of rattan:  pliability and flexibility. The design takes advantage of these aspects while addressing the structural requirements of a chair in the joinery.  The result is an almost whimsical tangle of rattan lines which provide strength, comfort and beauty.

Creating a piece of furniture with rattan brings challenges. One of the values of this natural material is the flexibility allowing it to be contorted into almost any shape. At the same time its pliable character requires extra support to provide structural strength. The concept behind the Pretzel series was to create furniture from modular shapes made from continuous lengths of rattan.The pretzel shape was used because of its continuous line that loops like a rope knot. This shape results in a unique module that not only shows the character of rattan in an aesthetic expression but also creates strong structural support at the joints.
