PRETZEL bench + stool

Creating a piece of furniture with rattan brings challenges. One of the values of this natural material is the flexibility allowing it to be contorted into almost any shape. At the same time its pliable character requires extra support to provide structural strength. The concept behind the Pretzel series was to create furniture from modular shapes made from continuous lengths of rattan. The pretzel shape was used because of its continuous line that loops like a rope knot. This shape results in a unique module that not only shows the character of rattan in an aesthetic expression but also creates strong structural support at the joints.

Indonesia is known as an abundant source for natural materials but the excessive use of these raw materials results in deforestation, scarcity and environmental problems. Indonesia is also famous for its skilled craftsmen who are artisans with a link to the traditions of our culture.

STUDIO HIJI works with materials that are abundant and from environmentally responsible sources and we employ the exceptional skills of Indonesian craftsmen. Good design is about creating a bond between aesthetics, process, craft and material. By combining these aspects we believe furniture can provide not only comfort, utility and beauty but express our values and tell a story for each piece we create.
